Heart Screening

Over 500,000 people die each year from heart disease. Sixty two million Americans have some form of cardio-vascular disease (CVD - heart and blood vessel disease). Americans will pay approximately 330 billion dollars in 2002 for CVD related medical costs and disability. Every 33 seconds someone dies from heart and blood vessel diseases (American Heart Association).

We can assess for heart abnormalities using our Heart screening.

The cause of a heart attack is a blockage of the coronary arteries that supply blood flow to the muscle walls of your heart. There are three main coronary arteries that supply blood flow to different muscle segments of your heart. Over time these coronary arteries become clogged with plaque (a build-up of cholesterol and fat). As the plaque rogresses, less blood can flow freely through the arteries and your heart muscle receives less oxygen. You may feel chest pain with increased activity because your heart is working harder. Eventually the plaque in these coronary arteries may block the blood supply to a segment of your heart completely. In this situation the heart muscle begins to die. This is a heart attack!

Who is at risk for developing heart disease and a heart attack?

People  with a history of diabetes, a smoking history, high blood pressure, being overweight, approaching the age of 40 and greater, high cholesterol and an inactive lifestyle. In addition, individuals who may not have the above risk factors but have family members who do, may also be at risk.

Ask yourself these questions:

  • Have you ever had an uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, and fullness in your chest?
  • If so, did it last a few minutes or go away and then come back again?
  • Have you ever had a pain in your back, in one or both arms, in your neck or jaw? Did it last a few minutes, or went away, only to come back again?

The heart consists of chambers, muscle walls and valves that can become diseased. We can access your heart muscle wall strength, enlarged heart, abnormal muscle wall thickness and abnormalities of the valves.

"Your Health Matters" can screen you for heart disease and signs of previous heart attacks. If you have any of the risk factors mentioned above, please consider having a simple ultrasound test to screen for heart disease. The test is easy, takes little time and is offered at a very reasonable cost.

Examination time: 10 to 15 minutes, Cost: $60.00
